Where is Your Community?

Where do you experience support, acceptance, and protection?
With the new tools of communication today we can be connected 24/7. We can learn about our friends day, without a face-to-face conversation through status updates or tweets or blog posts.

I think community is grounded in face-to-face relationships. But I think something is happening to where we experience community. Maybe expanding community. I think it’s more fluid and dynamic. It’s not just in your living room or the pub. It happens on the fly.

Where do you find community?

  • Tim, I find community in

    - My annual neighborhood block party.
    - The annual Volunteer Fireman's' Ball for Mendota Heights.
    - My personal Mastermind group I formed to support my professional development (therby also supporting my peers in this group).
    - My day-to-day exchanges at the cafes I regularly support thru working out of the office.
  • Ward,
Thanks for your input. It sounds like community is grounded locally for you. How has technology played a part in developing your community?
  • Yes, for me community starts with knowing people IRL. I have certainly had conversations and interchange with people online in the various social media channels, but even then I's most rewarding if you can meet people face-to-face. That's what tweetups and conferences are for.
