* One More Question for Entrepreneurs

Posted on October 29th, 2009 by tim bursch. Filed under business, ideas, social action.

Have you thought about starting your own business? Or a side gig?

If yes then I bet you’ve asked yourself a lot of questions like . . .

Is there a market?

What are the start-up costs?
What are the barriers to entry?
What is the revenue potential?

and possibly you’ve come up with enough good reasons to take the plunge.

I wonder though, have you considered a social impact? What will this venture affect? People? Environment? Will it make a positive dent in the world?

What if you added this question to the list:
What could you integrate into your business that would make a positive social impact?

Let me know what you think.

* Are the lines blurring between business and non-profit?

I have friends that are pure entrepreneurs. They are great at business, investing in good ideas, and earning a gazillion dollars.

I also have friends that are in the trenches serving the most overlooked communities in the country. They are brilliant problem solvers, crazy creative, and are able to do a lot with a little bit of resources.

Both have amazing skills and passion. Both types of friends are making a big difference.

I also have friends that are trying to combine and integrate. They want to serve community and earn a gazillion dollars. They are merging profit and social venture.

Is one better? Does one or the other make a larger impact? What ways are you seeing lines blur between business and non-profit?

Watch soon for details on a Tweetchat regarding social impact, entrepreneurs, and action.

* My Top Five Takeaways from Unsummit3

Posted on October 11th, 2009 by tim bursch. Filed under Community, social media.

1. It’s all about people. That’s why I go to meet-ups, conferences, and networking events. Relationships.

2. Be real. Whatever you are selling or doing online, be real. You can’t fake it anymore.

3. Discussion is better than presentation. Some people invite conversation and others just share their information. Seems like more people stick around for open conversation.

4. Diversity rocks. Meeting new people, seeing a variety of generations, sharing very different ideas, all in one place.

5. Have fun! Don’t take all of this social media stuff too seriously. Life is hard sometimes, so have some fun with the people around you.

* Dogs, Cows, and True Self

Posted on October 5th, 2009 by tim bursch. Filed under business, personal development.

I heard a story recently that really made me think about being true to your self. Thanks to the wise man that shared this with me:

A family adopted a Border Collie from The Humane Society. They lived in the city and loved the dog.

The family lived in a modest house with a small yard and after some time they realized the dog needed more.

The family asked a relative that lived on a farm to take the dog. “Of course,” said the relative. The city man brought the dog to the farm and stayed during the day. Later that day the farmer commented that the Border Collie was getting along fine. Actually the dog was in it’s element and already helping to bring the cows home.

Why am I sharing such a simple dog and cow story? What does this have to do with business or work?
I think you know. The dog was made to herd cows.

What about you? Are in your element? Are you living out of your true self?
